Family Caregiver Tips in Fairfield, CT
You’ve done a lot of research to learn about being the best caregiver for your elderly loved one as you can. Because you lived so close to them it only made sense that you step up and provide the support they needed. What you may not have realized is the amount of stress being a family caregiver can be causing you.
There are approximately 44 million family caregivers taking care of elderly or disabled loved ones in the United States (according to the AARP). Most of these individuals don’t fully understand just how much caregiver stress affects them.
October is Health Literacy Month and it’s important to learn as much as possible about the various things you do and how they can impact your life. Your life as a caregiver can be completely turned upside down, even if you are expecting various challenges.
One of the first things people realize when they begin taking care of an elderly loved one is they don’t have as much time during the day as they thought originally. For example, you may have a full-time job with normal hours (9 to 5, for example) and by the time you get home after the commute through rush-hour traffic it is 6 o’clock in the evening. That usually leaves you four or five hours before it’s time to get into bed so you can wake up refreshed and ready to go the next day. If your elderly loved one only lives 10 minutes down the road from you, you might assume you can just stop over quickly for 15 or 20 minutes.
Then all of a sudden those 15 or 20 minutes are turning into an hour, two, or more. Then you have to give up exercising, you don’t eat as well as you used to, and you’re not pursuing things that are important to you. One of the most common things that happens when family members begin caring for aging loved ones is that the more they do for that senior, the more assistance the senior seems to require. That places increased pressure on their life.
With increased pressure comes an increase in caregiver stress. Stress can affect the body in many ways, including increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other ailments. This October, spend some time learning about the various health effects of caregiver stress and also the benefits of hiring a professional home care aide. It can make all the difference in the world to you and your elderly loved one.
