3 Factors Related to Aging That Can Affect Balance

Senior Home Safety in Fairfield, CT

Senior-Home-SafetyFrom the time we are children, our body changes each year. Often those changes are relatively slow and we barely notice them. Aside from puberty and moving from our teenage years into our young adult lives, most of those changes are so subtle that we don’t really notice any difference in our abilities to get things done.

However, when people reach a certain age, such as 65 or over, those changes can begin to develop in a negative way. Those negative changes can affect important aspect’s of a senior’s independence and mobility, such as balance.

Here are three ways that balance can be affected as people get older.

1. Less strength in the legs.

When strength begins to decline in our legs, it makes it difficult to maintain balance when we slip. Often, somebody younger with their full strength is not truly aware of just how many times during the day they could have lost their balance and fallen.

For seniors, a minor slip or shift in balance can lead to a fall and subsequent injuries.

2. Vestibular system degeneration

The inner ear system that detects where the body is in space can deteriorate as we get older. This makes it more difficult to maintain balance, and can lead to an increased risk of a fall.

3. Vision related problems.

Hearing and vision related problems can make it difficult for somebody to get around, even in the house they had lived for 50 years or more. Just because you know the layout of the house doesn’t mean you’re going to be able to navigate each room without running into something or missing the door.

If the senior has vision problems and doesn’t notice the end table in the living room, when they strike it with their leg, it can cause them to lose their balance and fall down.

Because of the different ways that balance is impacted as we age, senior home safety should be a top priority for every family member who is concerned about an elderly loved one.
