Why Stress Can Reduce Safety for Seniors at Home

Senior Home Safety in East Haven CT

Senior Home Safety There are many things that can cause stress in just about anyone’s life. Many people today report feeling stressed and anxious on almost a daily basis. This is not only unhealthy, it can actually affect safety, quality of life, and other aspects of life, including relationships.

For seniors living at home, their safety can be impacted by an overabundance of stress. Seniors may have many different things to worry about, including their health, strength, loved ones becoming ill, growing weaker, and even friends and family passing away.

Stress can also affect them with regard to taking care of their home, keeping up with her personal basic care, and even getting out to the store or to a doctor’s appointment.

Depending on situation, financial stress can often be a major factor in an elderly person’s life. When a person works their entire life, builds up a retirement portfolio, and then retires, they hope they have enough money to sustain themselves comfortably, travel if they want, and live the kind of life they would prefer to enjoy it.

However, health issues, the cost of medical care, the cost of prescription medications, inflation, and many other factors can cut into their retirement fund. This can create a tremendous amount of stress that affects their health, strength, and ability to say safe.

When a person is stress on a daily basis, it can make it difficult for them to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. This can lead to fatigue, a loss of focus, and more difficulty performing some basic tasks throughout the day.

Stress, when it impacts focus, can lead to simple mistakes. For a younger, stronger, healthier person, missing a step when walking up stairs may simply lead to a minor stumble. For a senior, it can lead to a serious fall and injuries.

Anyone who is dealing with continued stress in their life should seek ways to cope with it and alleviate the pressure that exists all around them. It may be more practical for the elderly individual to move into a smaller home, one that is on one level, easier to maintain, and even cheaper with regard to a mortgage, property taxes, heating and cooling, and so on.

When they address the stress in their life, when they overcome it and feel more relaxed, it will help improve safety for that senior at home tremendously.
