Home Care Options for Seniors in East Haven CT
The summer holiday season is fast approaching now and that means you might be trying to make plans for you and the rest of your family. If an elderly family member requires some type of extra care at home, you might have to make some considerations for them.
Here are five considerations you may need to make for the summer holidays, whether it’s the Fourth of July, Labor Day, a birthday celebration, anniversary, or anything else.
Consideration #1: Safety.
Safety should always be a top priority, especially for an elderly loved one who has difficulty maintaining their balance or getting around on their own.
When planning a celebration, barbecue, family reunion, or simple party, you want to make sure the senior who is in attendance is going to be safe. Who is going to look after him or her? Who will support him or her into or out of the bathroom, if necessary? These are safety considerations that are important to make.
Consideration #2: Availability.
If you are a family caregiver, that means you might take it upon yourself to care for this other senior, even during these family gatherings or other parties and celebrations. If you’re the one hosting the celebration or barbecue, for example, you’re not going to have the kind of time you need to devote to the senior.
Consideration #3: Travel.
Traveling for seniors can be fun, but it can also be challenging, depending on their physical capabilities. If you’re planning on traveling with an elderly loved one who requires assistance, plan on extra stops for bathroom breaks, stretching, and more.
Consideration #4: Staying warm.
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the evenings won’t get cool, especially in certain climates. As a result, you want to make sure the senior has plenty of extra layers of clothing, just in case the temperature dips too low or unexpectedly low.
Consideration #5: A home care aide deserves notice.
If you’ve looked into various home care options for your loved one, you likely realized hiring through an agency was the best course of action. Maybe your loved one has been doing great, is happy, and active.
This home care aide has built a good relationship with your elderly loved one, but that doesn’t mean he or she is going to be able to drop everything else to go on vacation to support the senior.
Make sure you give plenty of notice when travel is expected, when certain events are going to take place, and other situations are going to arise.
You may have to request an additional home care aide, but if you hired through an agency, there will be plenty of resources available to support your loved one at any time over the summer.
