Home Care Options for Seniors in Stamford CT
This week is National Fraud Week. Many seniors are actually at an increased risk of becoming victims of scams or fraud because these cons become much more sophisticated as the years pass and technology advances.
The most common scams seniors become victims of are phone scams. If an elderly person is feeling lonely because they don’t have many friends in the area, don’t get out as often as they used to, and are living alone, they may have a tendency to become more attached to phone conversations, even if they occur with total strangers, such as telemarketers.
These telemarketers or other scam artists specifically target certain individuals, and began asking questions early in the conversation about who else lives in the residence with them, their age, and even their closeness to their family. It may sound convincing, such as an experienced salesperson trying to find out as much about his or her target, but what they’re doing is trying to give themselves better ammunition to help the senior open their wallets or provide personal, identifiable information to that other person on the phone.
Email scams are also something seniors have to deal with today. More elderly individuals are using computers and tablets for email communication with friends and family all across the country or around the world, and sophisticated email scams can appear as though they’re coming from a person’s financial institution (bank), utility company, Microsoft, Apple, or many other companies that seem legitimate. However, these are cloned emails, most of the time, and are intended to direct the individual to click on a link that takes them to a website that looks like the actual company website, but it’s a phishing scam seeking personal information, such as account names and passwords.
How a home care aide can help.
By relying on an experience home care aide, especially somebody who works for an agency, seniors can be provided some guidance when those phone calls or emails come in. If they have questions about whether a phone conversation is legitimate or not, they can hand the phone to the home care aide who can verify it with them.
Another benefit to relying on home care support is that the senior will not be as lonely any longer, and that means he or she will be less prone to needing the conversation with that telemarketer or potential scam artist.
