Reduce Hospital Readmission Rates in Fairfield CT
If you’ve ever flown in a commercial airplane, and if you’ve paid attention to the safety instructions as part of the pre-flight routine, you understand the directions, in the event of air cabin pressure loss, is for a parent to put an oxygen mask on their face first, then to secure one on their child’s face. There’s a reason for this.
If a person is trying to help others and is suddenly not taking care of themselves, and if they pass out (in the airplane scenario), what good will it be for their own child?
In the same way, if you are helping an elderly family member or friend following the hospital stay, such as stopping by their house, helping them get out of bed, preparing meals, doing some housework and laundry, and much more, but you’re not taking care of yourself, what will happen in the event you become ill?
You suddenly won’t be much good to them.
It’s important for you to take care of yourself, to put your own oxygen mask on, so to speak, before worrying about their particular needs.
How can you do that? First, you need to keep up with your own diet and proper level of exercise. You may have a full-time job and a number of other responsibilities going on throughout the day. It’s certainly an overwhelming challenge at times to find time for those little things. You may get in the habit of grabbing fast food meals every once in a while.
Unfortunately, that ‘once in a while’ will likely turn into more frequent trips to the drive-thru. You may skip an exercise routine one day because you simply don’t have time or energy. It suddenly becomes easier to skip the next day as well. Before you realize it, two weeks have passed and you haven’t done anything to take care of yourself.
If you get sick while that elderly family member is still recovering, you won’t be able to support them properly. That reduces the chances of a good, healthy recovery and actually increases the risk of them needing to return to the hospital due to some complication.
What’s the best thing you can do?
If you have no prior experience supporting seniors after hospitalizations, hire a home care aide instead. When your loved one is relying on an experienced caregiver, the odds of making a full and healthy recovery increase dramatically.
You can still be there as a support system for this senior but you’ll have your own oxygen mask securely in place to better care and support that family member.
