When you try to make extremely important decisions in life, do you ever sit down with a checklist? This could be a pros and cons list or something simpler. If you are talking about home care options, either for yourself or a beloved family member, you should sit down and make a simple checklist to determine if this is something you need to discuss more seriously now.
Checklist Item #1: Who needs help?
Is it you? Is it a spouse? Is it a parent or other elderly loved one? It could even be an adult child who has been injured or disabled in an accident. It may even be at friend who was involved in an accident and is going to require months of physical therapy before they can get back to some semblance of normalcy.
As long as you know who it is that needs help, you can determine what level of assistance they might require.
Checklist Item #2: Would home care help?
If hiring a home care aide would be a valuable option, then it’s time to discuss that openly and honestly. If you honestly don’t think that an experienced, qualified caregiver would be a benefit, if a visiting nurse or physical therapist is required, then you need to go no further in this list.
Checklist Item #3: Is it affordable?
Home care is the most affordable senior care option there is. It also allows people to recover and still enjoy life at home. There are other options, but they are far more costly than hiring a home care aide.
Remember, a home care aide can be hired for just a couple of hours a day, even just a couple of days a week to start.
Checklist Item #4: How much help do they need?
Do they need around-the-clock care? Do they need help in the morning getting out of bed and getting ready for the day? Do they need assistance sometimes in the afternoons to go to the store, to go to a doctor’s appointment, or to even visit with friends?
Checklist Item #5: Will they agree to it?
Unless you’ve already discussed this you won’t know the answer to this question. However, if you are not completely certain if the answer will be absolutely no, then you owe it to yourself to think long and hard about these questions.
What’s the worst that can happen by simply discussing home care options? If that person says absolutely not right now, you need to respect their decision, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn more about it and the benefits that hiring a home care aide can offer at this point in their life.
